Slowing Progression to AD with engAgeD
The SPRINT Research Group reported that, in a large clinical trial (N=9,361) of older adults with hypertension, aggressive control of blood pressure could reduce Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) risk by 18%.
The engAgeD program is ready to undergoing initial testing (android based mobile app and a web app that includes 32 educational sessions)
- The engAgeD program is patterned our CB-DPP. In addition to encouraging proper eating, increased physical activity, weight loss/maintenance and reduced blood sugar, the program will also encourage users to: control/reduced their blood pressure
- increase social engagement
- increase cognitive engagementFunding is being sought for to conduct an IRB study that has already been approved.
- It is known that Aβ42/Aβ40 and cognitive function improve with lifestyle intervention in patients with MCI and early AD.
- It is not known if those with a Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio consistent with neocortical amyloid burden but no clinical symptoms have ratios tha become “more normal” with lifestyle change. So we propose to use ASL and Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio. Hopefully plasma ratios do the trick!
- Just as there is a National DPP there should be a National ADPP and the critical pieces are the Quest Aβ42/Aβ40 plasma test and engAgeD!
- All elderly adults with normal cognitive function should be evaluated with the Aβ42/Aβ40 plasma test and if their ratios are consistent with neocortical amyloid burden they should start the engAgeD program!
